CONSULAR FOLLOW-UP ON THE CASE OF A MEXICAN NATIONAL WHO DIED WHILE IN CUSTODY OF THE UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES
- The Consulate General of Mexico in San Diegorequested an expedite, impartial and thorough investigation.
The Government of Mexico, through the Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego, responded to the incident registered on January 12, 2022, in which a Mexican national died while in custody of immigration authorities in an area adjacent to the Otay Port of Entry.
The Consulate has requested local authorities to conduct an expedite, impartial and thorough investigation to establish the facts and to hold accountable those responsible. It has as well established communication with a consulting attorney so that Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs can determine the legal measures to be undertaken in defense of the Mexican national.
The Consulate General of Mexico in San Diego will provide consular assistance to the victim’s relatives to secure legal aid, to transfer his remains back to Mexico and to issue any necessary documents.
Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs deeply regrets the death of the Mexican national and underscores the importance that repatriations occur in a safe, orderly and dignified manner, and with strict adherence to the current legal framework. The protection of Mexican community abroad constitutes the highest priority of our foreign policy.
SEGUIMIENTO CONSULAR AL CASO DE MEXICANO FALLECIDO BAJO CUSTODIA DE LA AUTORIDAD MIGRATORIA ESTADOUNIDENSE
- El Consulado General de México en San Diego solicitó una investigación transparente, imparcial y expedita para esclarecer los hechos y deslindar responsabilidades.
El Gobierno de México, a través del Consulado General de México en San Diego, atiende puntualmente el incidente registrado el 12 de enero de 2022 en el que falleció una persona mexicana que se encontraba bajo custodia de las autoridades migratorias en un área adyacente a la garita de Otay.
La representación consular solicitó a las autoridades correspondientes una investigación transparente, imparcial y expedita para esclarecer los hechos y deslindar responsabilidades, y ha recurrido a uno de sus abogados consultores con el fin de que la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores cuente con elementos para valorar las opciones legales para la defensa del nacional mexicano.
El Consulado General de México en San Diego brindará asistencia consular a los familiares de la víctima en materia legal y para el traslado de restos y la expedición de la documentación necesaria para ello, de ser el caso.
La Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores lamenta profundamente el fallecimiento del connacional, al tiempo que vigila que las repatriaciones de nuestros connacionales se realicen de forma segura, ordenada y digna y con estricto apego al marco legal vigente, y reitera que la protección de las comunidades mexicanas en el exterior constituye la más alta prioridad de nuestra política exterior.
