Rayados 1-2 Xoloitzcuintles, LIGA MX Quarterfinals second leg

MONTERREY, Mexico (May 5, 2018) – Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles is in the LIGA MX semifinals. Miller Bolaños and Martin Lucero scored for the visiting team in a 2-1 win against Rayados de Monterrey Saturday in the second leg of the 2018 Clausura quarterfinals.

The Xoloitzcuintles moves on to the semifinals next week after winning the home-and-home series 3-2 in aggregate against the Rayados. Coach Diego Cocca’s team awaits its next opponent based on Sunday’s results.

Both teams played to a 1-1 tie May 2 at Estadio Caliente in the first leg. Jose Rivero scored for Club Tijuana in that match and Dorlan Pabon for Monterrey.

In the second leg, it was Bolaños gave the Xoloitzcuintles a 1-0 lead six minutes into the match. Bolaños fired a shot near the top of the penalty box. It was deflected off a defender Leonel Vangioni and floated over Rayados goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez, bouncing into the net.

Club Tijuana took a 2-0 lead in the 23rd when Martin Lucero buried a shot into the Monterrey net. Lucero, sprinting behind two defenders, tapped in a Gustavo Bou cross with his right leg. Bou beat Jose Basanta with a slide to win the ball, got up and ran free to send the assist into the six-yard-box.

Pabon cut the lead to 2-1 in the 46th minute when he took a ball and fired it into the right wall of the Gibran Lajud net. Monterrey, the No. 3 seed, came out in the second half looking to be more offensive and pressured Tijuana into its territory. But the Xolos defense and a handful of Lajud saves preserved the win.
